Wannabez #2, Cover Inks

Welcome back, loyal readers, I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week, but I know you, like myself, are ready for the weekend!

Well, before you go on your way for a couple of days, check out the inks for our issue #2 cover!

You may recognize this image as we used it for an ad in the Haven catalog a while back. It was actually created for that purpose, kind of as a parody of Wolverine and to tease at the playful rivalry between Mau and Dober-Man as you will soon see.

As we got the colored version of the piece done, we both, Scott and I, really fell in love with the piece, and figured, hey, issue #2 is our Mau-centric issue, why not use this for the cover? so that’s what we decided to do.

So before we get to that – and I haven’t forgotten about the announcement I promised – I thought I’d show you the inks, which I don’t think we’ve shown before anywhere.

Speaking of covers, before I get to that all-important announcement, check out the latest post on the main blog as this morning I’ve posted the evolution of the issue #1 cover, from concept emails, photo reference, pencils, inks, to colors.

Now, back to this big announcement. Let me preface this by apologizing if anyone got excited about this pending announcement. I was informed that I made it sound like some grand thing on Tuesday and, well, it’s not as great as you would all like I’m sure. So here goes.

After much, MUCH consideration, weighing the pros and cons and so forth, we have decided to delay the launch of issue #2 for a while. It is with a heavy heart we do so, but considering everything going on in all our lives it’s the best thing for us and for the series right now. Allow me to explain.

In less than three weeks I am having surgery. Sure, it’s a simple outpatient surgery, and I should be back up in a couple of weeks. But because I’ve let it go so long my body hasn’t handled it as well as most and I’ve been in constant pain, which has caused my productivity to greatly suffer, especially over the past 8 months or so as it has increasingly gotten worse.

In addition to that, in less than a month, Scott is heading to C2E2 where he will be set up in Artist Alley, and he’s trying to get some of his own stuff done for the con over the next few weeks. And Lisa will be going on a short vacation in a couple of weeks as well.

Lisa, as you know, is now coloring Darkwing Duck, and she continues to flat for various Marvel colorists. This leaves her very little time and we kind of got down to the wire with the pages as Scott had other committments as well. This delay is neither of their faults, it’s a decision we came to collectively and I made the ultimate call, so don’t blame anyone but me.

Scott had the idea of posting the inked pages for now and Lisa going back and coloring them. For a couple of days that was the plan, but after talking again with Lisa and realizing my own schedule with surgery and all, I felt it best for all of us to concentrate on other things through March and hit the ground running after surgeries, conventions and vacations this coming month.

So, it is now official that Wannabez #2, while currently in production, will be delayed for at least a few weeks. We hope to have it launched by early April at the latest, but we’re not going to put a definite date on it at this time.

In the meantime, I will be finishing our Kickstarter proposal and submitting it and I’ll update you all on that next week. I will also continue to post behind the scenes stuff and extras as often as I can, but definitely every Tuesday and Friday to keep our update schedule consistent.

Thanks to all of you for your support and loyalty, we greatly appreciate it. We realize that taking a break like this, especially so early in the comic’s life, may cause some of you to move on, but we sincerely hope you will stick with us, check the site frequently for some cool stuff, and come back in full force with us when we eventually do launch the long awaited and anticipated Mau issue.

Have a great weekend!

-Brant
